Frequently Asked Questions
-
Tutoring focuses on specific subjects—like helping a student with math or writing. Academic coaching is different. I focus on the underlying skills that help students succeed in all subjects: time management, organization, motivation, planning and follow-through. Coaching helps students develop habits that lead to long-term success—not just better grades this week.

My students are often bright and capable but struggle with focus, organization, or motivation. They may have ADHD, executive functioning challenges, or simply feel overwhelmed by school. I work with high schoolers, college students and even recent graduates who need structure and support. If a student is underperforming relative to their potential, I help them get back on track with strategies that fit how they learn and think.
-
Each 50-minute session is built around three things:
Clarity – We identify what’s holding the student back that week.
Strategy – We create a specific plan to manage assignments, deadlines, or challenges.
Accountability – We follow up on what was discussed last session and adjust as needed. Students need to be ready to put effort into the process.
Sessions are one-on-one, via Google Meet, tailored to the student’s needs and always focused on building momentum and confidence.

At Thompson Academic Coaching, I use AI tools to enhance—not replace—the coaching experience. AI helps streamline scheduling, track academic progress, and personalize learning strategies based on student needs. But let’s be clear: no algorithm can replace the power of human connection, accountability, or encouragement. I bring the experience, insight and support that tech alone can't deliver.
-
I encourage students to use AI as a tool—not a shortcut. It’s great for brainstorming, organizing thoughts, checking grammar or even getting explanations in plain English. But if you’re using it to do the work for you, you’re missing the whole point of learning. The goal is to build skills, not just submit assignments. AI can sharpen your thinking—but only if you are still doing the thinking.

Executive function coaching helps students build the core skills they need to succeed in school and life—especially those who struggle with organization, time management, focus or follow-through. These challenges are common in students with ADHD or learning differences, but they also affect students who are simply overwhelmed by academic pressure or disorganized habits.
At Thompson Academic Coaching, I provide one-on-one support that goes beyond traditional tutoring. My coaching sessions help students create structure, manage their workload, set goals, meet deadlines and develop study habits that work for their brain. I specialize in working with high school and college students who are intelligent and capable but aren’t reaching their full potential due to executive functioning difficulties.
If your child is smart but procrastinates, misses assignments, or seems unmotivated, they may benefit from academic coaching that teaches them how to take control of their time, focus their energy and follow through with confidence. We offer virtual coaching sessions that are customized to each student’s needs, with regular communication to keep parents informed and involved.
Whether you're looking for academic coaching in Nashville or Brentwood, TN, ADHD coaching for students, or a trusted alternative to tutoring, I am here to help your student succeed—academically and beyond.
